Things start to go wrong for the group though when one of them is attacked by an unseen creature and an explosion causes a cave-in forcing the rest to go deeper to find a way out. This is where The Cave is at its best, showing the imaginative and impressive locations.
There, they discover a whole new world, one that has been left untouched by man for centuries, maybe even longer. They, alongside brothers Jack (Cole Hauser) and Tyler McAllister (Eddie Cibrian), and their team head into the caves. Kathryn Jennings (Lena Headey) and cameraman Alex Kim (Daniel Dae Kim). Nicolai (Marcel Iureș) who believes there may be an undiscovered ecosystem inside. Their part of the story ends when they hear noises in the darkness.įinally, the actual cast enter as we jump forward in time again to meet a group of scientists and cave explorers/spelunkers/divers who are going in to investigate the cave system below the mountains and ruined church. The men fall into the cavern below and are trapped. Being the smart soldiers that they are, they decide to blow it open thus causing the church to collapse around them. They find it, go inside and discover a large floor mosaic that is sealing an entry to caves below it. Many centuries later, we’re then introduced to a group Soviet and British soldiers who are searching for supposed buried treasure in this lost church. The first of which sees a large church and a village in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania during the 13th century destroyed by a landslide. It doesn’t begin well at all with two, yes that is two, cold starts. Is it really as bad as many suggest it is? It should have wiped the floor with The Descent but ultimately failed at the box office and is regarded as a below average movie. Unfortunately, it seems that the venue is no longer in function.Coming out the same year as the excellent cave-related horror, The Descent, The Cave had a much larger budget and a cast that included some well known names. The park was known for its adventure activities such as ziplining, hanging bridges, rappelling, and cenotes snorkeling.

This portion of the movie was filmed in the Hidden Worlds Cenotes Park, an amusement park located at Rancho la Teresita, in the Quintana Roo state of Mexico. We meet Jack and his team during a mission in Mexico. Producer Andrew Mason roped in some of the most renowned cave divers as consultants to make these sequences as realistic as possible. This is where the crew filmed the mountain and cave scenes. Zărnești is situated near the Piatra Craiului Mountains, part of the Southern Carpathian mountains range. Filming was carried out near Zărnești, a small town in the Brașov County of Romania. The historical region has some of the oldest forests in Europe and is known to be home to Count Dracula. Some scenes were filmed in the Transylvania region of Romania. From there, the cast and crew commuted to 45 minutes to the filming site in the Carpathian Mountains. The team also set up base in Bucharest, which lies approximately 12 miles from Buftea. During filming, the actors had to spend 10-12 hours daily in their wetsuits, jumping in and out of the water. The crew constructed a 750,000-gallon tank to film the underwater sequences. It has maintained its position as one of Eastern Europe’s oldest and largest movie production hubs. The vast production studio is located at Strada Studioului 1 in the suburbs of Buftea. The studio work was predominantly carried out in Bucharest Film Studios (also known as MediaPro Studios or Buftea Studios). With over 12,000 registered caves in its vast natural reserve, the country was seemingly the ideal place for this production. Romania serves as the primary filming site for ‘The Cave,’ considering it is also where the movie is set. Let us now take you to the specific locations that feature in the movie! Buftea, Romania As per reports, it was less expensive to film in Romania than in the USA. The filming crew first visited Romania, where most of the film is set, and then moved to Mexico. Principal photography was carried out for several months in 2004, beginning sometime early in the year and wrapping up by the end of summer. ‘The Cave’ was filmed in Romania and Mexico.
